I have a confession to make. I didn’t set a New Year’s Resolution this year. Instead, this year, I have decided to focus on the journey rather than a specific destination. I have a general idea of where I’d like to go. I want to finish my memoir. I want to grow my YouTube channel to bring you some engaging content, continue elevating my health, and work on embracing the hard things in life. Are those goals? I see them more as guideposts. Why? Because I am not investing in the outcome.
And you know what? I feel liberated. I don’t feel the same pressure to achieve a specific outcome. I do not fear failure or worry about disappointing myself or others. I am excited to have the freedom to explore new possibilities and to be absolutely okay with not today. To learn more about going with the flow, check out my post on the Uncarved Block.
If this seems enticing, consider embracing a more fluid approach to life that emphasizes growth rather than goals.
Let’s face it, life isn’t a straight line from point A to point B. It’s a messy yet beautiful journey with unexpected turns, setbacks, and impressive wins. I’m not suggesting we eliminate traditional goal setting; it certainly has its place. I’ve leveraged it for myself and people I’ve worked with over the years. Without tangible goals, I couldn’t have completed marathons, triathlons, my PhD, and Seminary. But, I’ve noticed over the years that while goals are helpful, they can also lead to unnecessary hardship. Especially when packaged as a “New Year’s Resolution,” which often we feel compelled to do.
We cannot force our complex human experience into an oversimplified checkbox system. We might meet the objective, but at what cost?
When was the last time your life went precisely according to plan? Maybe you set out to advance with your employer but discovered a passion for teaching along the way. Or perhaps your rigid fitness goals led to burnout instead of the sustainable healthy lifestyle you sought.
The problem isn’t with aspiring; it’s with the unrelenting and unforgiving ways we approach the work. We’re human beings, not machines. Our needs, desires, and circumstances change. When we focus on goals rather than growth, we risk missing the beauty life has for us in all the bumps along the way.
Embracing a More Fluid Approach
Instead of setting concrete, inflexible goals, consider setting guideposts focused on your growth, not the outcome.
- Who are you at your core?
- How do you want to show up in the world?
- How can you give more love and compassion to yourself and others?
These broader guideposts allow room for adaptation while keeping us moving in a meaningful direction.
Think of it like planning a road trip. While having a destination in mind is good, some of the most memorable moments come from unexpected detours and discoveries. The same principle applies to personal growth.
Embracing a more fluid approach means being open to the twists and turns, the detours and unexpected moments that shape our journey. It means letting go of control, learning to trust, being present, and letting each moment guide you.
By acknowledging that growth is not a linear path but a meandering exploration, we invite curiosity, creativity, and serendipity into our lives. We become more attuned to the lessons in every experience, even those that may initially appear as setbacks or failures.
This requires us to cultivate a deep sense of self-awareness and self-compassion. It asks us to celebrate our progress, no matter how small, and see our setbacks and learning, not failures. We learn to accept and embrace humanity’s messy, imperfect beauty.
So, as you embark on your journey of personal growth, remember to hold your goals lightly. Allow yourself the grace to recalibrate, adjust, and redefine along the way. Most importantly, savor each moment of growth, knowing that it is in these moments that we truly come alive.
Here are a few practical steps for Personal Growth
- Listen to your body and mind
- Pay attention to what energizes you and what drains you
- Adjust your course based on genuine needs, not just predetermined plans
- Make space for rest and reflection
- Celebrate small wins and learning moments
- Acknowledge progress without waiting for significant milestones
- Find value in setbacks by focusing on lessons learned
- Share your journey with others who support your growth
- Stay flexible and open
- Allow your aspirations to evolve as you grow
- Welcome unexpected opportunities
- Trust your intuition alongside your logic
Moving Forward with Compassion
Remember, you are not your goals. You’re a human being on a journey of growth and discovery. Be patient with yourself. Embrace the uncertainty. Trust that you’ll find your way to meaningful progress by staying true to your values and remaining open to life’s flow.
The most sustainable changes often come not from rigid goal setting but from gentle, consistent attention to what truly matters to us. By approaching our growth with humanity and heart, we create space for authentic transformation that lasts.
Let’s free ourselves from the pressure of perfect execution and embrace the beautiful mess of being human. After all, it’s not about reaching a destination – it’s about who we become along the way.
